What's My Stuff Worth?

Tuesday Sep 29th, 2020

Q: What’s my stuff worth?
A: It all depends on who you ask!

In the past few years, I have learned that things people think are worth money often are not, while the value of items thought to be worthless, can be surprising!

The only way to find out for sure is to source interested buyers and ask what they are willing to pay.

Ask about an AUCTION. Sending surplus items to auction seems easy and convenient. Start by figuring out what stuff you don’t want to keep. First, take photos of the items and send them to an Auction House to make sure they are interested. If they express interest, arrange to deliver the items for their next auction. The price you receive depends on who shows up and what they are interested in buying.

Consider a CONTENTS SALE. A Contents Sale is like a garage sale but held in your house and conducted by someone else. The amount you receive is based on a commission split; it is to everyone’s advantage to sell your stuff for as much as possible.

Deal with a DEALER. There might be people interested in buying your stuff... at their price! Dealers visit your house, look at what you want to sell, and may or may not make you an offer. Dealers know what’s hot and what’s not. With luck, you can release unwanted stuff from your house. If the offer includes a clear-out, you’ll save on cartage and/or disposal costs.

Go with a GARAGE SALE. A garage sale is a great way to meet your neighbours but may not always be the best way to make money. Garage sales are time-consuming, labour-intensive, weather-dependent, and require you to negotiate the selling cost of your stuff with your neighbour. If you are emotionally involved with your stuff, a garage sale might not be the best recipe for financial success.

Investigate the INTERNET. Who hasn’t looked at items for sale online? Post items for donation or sale on eBay, craigslist or kijiji. All you need is some time and a bit of computer savvy.

The best time to release surplus items is NOW!
