Idyllic Setting for Suburban Living
Named when two princesses, Anne and Margaret, visited the neighbourhood to open a school years ago, Princess Anne Manor is on the east side of Kipling, and Princess Margaret Gardens (see separate neighbourhood) is on the west. The boundaries are Eglinton Avenue to the north, Martin Grove to the west, Islington to the east and Rathburn Road to the south.
The Home Smith Company, the same company that developed the beautiful homes of Kingsway, Baby Point and Old Mill, developed Princess Anne Manor in the early 1950's. The area is defined by gracious living in elegant homes with large backyards. If you want to sound "in the know" then refer to Princess Anne Manor as "the Manor!"
The neighbourhood features spacious homes on generous lots, some as wide as 80 to 100 feet. Many of the homes are extensively renovated or custom rebuilt. You'll find classic ranch-style bungalows, contemporary bungalows, as well as split and back-splits, 2 storey homes and Georgian Revival family homes. Interiors generally have large principal rooms, wide staircases, large kitchens, outdoor patios - everything you need for easy living and entertaining. The homes also are detached with double garages.
Residents of Princess Anne Manor enjoy public tennis courts, baseball and sports fields, a baseball diamond, a field and large green open space available for public use at the John G. Althouse School. Both Princess Anne Park and Princess Margaret Parks are in the area as well as nearby West Deanwood Park, a lovely greenspace and great place to spot many varieties of birds. There are also some lovely walking/bicycle trails along Mimico Creek. Like to golf? This is the location for St. George Golf and Country Club, one of Canada's most prestigious golf courses.
There is good shopping at Humbertown Shopping Centre, Richview Plaza and Thorncrest Plaza; Sherway Gardens and many convenient big box stores are less than 10 minutes away by car. Transit and subway lines are all close. Motorists are a half hour from downtown Toronto, and 5 minutes from Highway 401 via Islington Avenue or Kipling Road. From Kipling station, you can connect to GO Transit, the Pearson Airport express bus, and to Mississauga Transit.
One of my favourite pieces of nostalgia from this neighbourhood is an excerpt from a 1955 brochure that advertised this "new" development: Rapid acceptance of Princess Anne Manor and Princess Gardens by the builders and homeowners has been unprecedented. More than 45 discriminating families have moved into the area since May 1955..."
