The feng shui principle comes from an ancient Chinese poem. It is the practice of arranging furniture and decor pieces in a way that is in balance with the natural world. The goal is to create a space where the individual and their environment establish harmony while harnessing energy forces. Here’s a few pointers on how to achieve feng shui in your home.

The essential principles of feng shui one must consider in your home are: the chi, the commanding position, the bagua and the five elements.

Chi is the vital life force or energy. Decluttering your space is often an effective way to achieve optimal chi. The philosophy is that positive energy needs room to flow freely.

The commanding position is the spot in a room that is the farthest from the door and not in direct line with it. It should be diagonal to the door and it’s best if you have a clear line of sight to the door. This is the spot in the room where you should spend the most time. The basic rules of feng shui suggest you rearrange your furniture so that your bed, your desk and the stove are positioned there.

The bagua is an energy map. Bagua translates to “eight areas”. Family, wealth, health, helpful people & travel, children, knowledge, fame & career.  The idea is that you use different elements to help activate what you want to support in your life.

Colour: You would use the colour purple to increase wealth and abundance. Gray is used to affect the quality of your life and so on…

Elements: Using wood as a design element would help support your family life. The elements are linked to the seasons, spring representing wood energy, summer fire energy.

Numbers: It is believed that the best numbers to make sure good energy can enter your home without obstruction are 1, 2, 3, 6, 8 and 9.

Shapes, colour and the positioning of decor elements in your home are believed to create a harmonious atmosphere in your home. For instance a square earth-toned rug in the center of your home can help you achieve tai qi which is related to your health and overall well being.

The direction of your home faces will affect how the qi (life force energy) is flowing to your property.

Feng shui is an ancient Chinese practice with the goal of inviting positive energy and balance to your home.
